Former Chief Justice Bandial’s WhatsApp Hacked in Targeted Cyber Attack

By Ariz Riaz

Former Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Atta Bandial has fallen victim to a sophisticated WhatsApp hacking attempt, with cybercriminals gaining unauthorized access to his account and demanding money from his contacts, officials confirmed.

The incident, which occurred this week, saw hackers take control of the former top judge’s personal WhatsApp account and immediately begin sending messages to individuals in his contact list seeking financial transactions. According to sources close to Bandial, the impersonator specifically requested Rs500,000 from acquaintances, exploiting the former chief justice’s reputation to lend credibility to the fraudulent demands.

Immediate Response

Upon discovering the breach, Bandial promptly contacted the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) to report the incident and initiate a formal investigation. Sources confirmed that the former chief justice filed a formal complaint seeking technical assistance to recover his compromised account and trace those responsible for the cyber attack.

Officials at NCCIA have confirmed that cybercrime teams are actively investigating the matter and have issued a public advisory warning individuals not to comply with any suspicious financial requests received from the compromised account. Authorities are working to restore Bandial’s account and prevent further misuse of his digital identity.

Growing Cyber Threat Landscape

The hacking of Justice Bandial’s account highlights a troubling trend of cybersecurity threats targeting high-profile public figures in Pakistan. According to the FIA Cyber Crime Wing, there has been a significant rise in WhatsApp account hacking incidents across the country, with more than 1,400 complaints received since July 2024.

Cybersecurity experts note that fraudsters are increasingly exploiting unsecured accounts to demand ransoms or extract sensitive information. The attackers reportedly employ advanced techniques to gain unauthorized access, exploiting weaknesses in account security as the cybercrime landscape in Pakistan continues to evolve.

This incident is not isolated. In a separate case, Waleed Anwar, the Assistant Commissioner of Hajira in Azad Kashmir, recently lost access to his WhatsApp account after scammers tricked him through a fake courier service call, demonstrating the varied tactics employed by cybercriminals.

Preventive Measures Urged

Following the incident, cybersecurity experts have emphasized the importance of robust digital security measures for all users. Key recommendations include enabling two-factor authentication on WhatsApp accounts, regularly updating passwords, and exercising caution in online behavior to protect personal and professional communications.

Pakistan’s cybersecurity laws classify unauthorized access to electronic accounts and extortion attempts via messaging platforms as criminal offenses. Government defense agencies have issued alerts to both public officials and citizens about phishing schemes that use mobile phone hacking methods and messaging account infiltration tactics to steal confidential data.

Authorities have urged citizens to remain cautious about messages requesting money or sensitive information, even when received from known contacts, as hackers can exploit compromised accounts. Security experts recommend that users always verify suspicious messages directly through phone calls rather than responding through messaging platforms.

Ongoing Investigation

The NCCIA continues its investigation into the Bandial incident, with officials working to trace the perpetrators and prevent similar attacks on other public figures. The case serves as a stark reminder of the evolving threat landscape in Pakistan’s digital ecosystem and the urgent need for collective efforts to secure digital infrastructure across all sectors .
