The Punjab government has launched the Electric Bike Scheme 2026, under which 100,000 electric motorcycles will be distributed to students across the province to improve access to education, promote environmentally friendly transport and reduce commuting costs.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced the initiative during a ceremony in Arifwala, describing it as one of the province’s largest student welfare programmes. The scheme is designed to make daily travel safer, easier and more affordable for students attending colleges and universities.
Under the programme, female students will receive electric bikes free of charge, while male students will be able to purchase the vehicles through interest-free monthly instalments, making ownership more accessible for families.
Who is eligible?
According to the Punjab government, applicants must meet several eligibility requirements to qualify for the scheme:
- Be at least 18 years of age (some programme guidelines allow applicants up to 35 years).
- Be enrolled as a regular student at a college or university recognised by the Higher Education Commission (HEC).
- Hold a valid Punjab domicile.
- Possess a valid motorcycle driving licence or learner’s permit.
- Not already own a registered motor vehicle.
- Only one electric bike per family will be allocated, even if multiple siblings apply.
Officials say these criteria are intended to ensure the bikes are distributed fairly among eligible students.
How to apply
Students can submit their applications through the official Punjab government online portal by following these steps:
- Register using their CNIC, student information and contact details.
- Complete the online application form.
- Upload all required supporting documents.
- Submit the application for verification.
- Wait for the computerised balloting process.
- Track the application status online.
Applicants will need to provide:

Additional benefits
The scheme also includes several additional incentives designed to support students, including:
- Vehicle insurance
- Solar charging support
- Interest-free instalment plans for male students
- Online application tracking
- Transparent computerised balloting to ensure fair allocation
The Punjab government has also warned applicants to avoid fraudulent websites and unauthorised agents claiming they can guarantee selection. Officials emphasised that all applications will be processed solely through the official government portal, with successful candidates selected through a transparent electronic balloting system.
The Electric Bike Scheme forms part of the Punjab government’s broader education and youth development strategy, which also includes laptop distribution, scholarships and investments in public education infrastructure. Officials say the initiative is expected to improve mobility for students, particularly those travelling long distances to educational institutions, while encouraging the adoption of cleaner transportation across the province.
