Google says it has resolved a technical glitch that caused advertisements to appear for YouTube Premium subscribers, restoring the ad-free experience for which users pay $13.99 a month.
The issue, which disrupted listening for many users earlier this week, was said to be particularly frustrating for those using YouTube Music on Google Home and Nest devices.
According to reports circulating online, YouTube Premium users first noticed the glitch on February 20, with complaints quickly flooding the Google Home subreddit. Affected users reported that ads were appearing non-stop, even after resetting their devices—suggesting the problem was at the account level rather than with individual hardware.
Beyond unwanted advertisements, users also reported experiencing long pauses before songs would play, low volume, casting problems, and disruptions to their YouTube Music algorithm. One frustrated user claimed these issues had persisted for over a year, leading them to cancel their subscription entirely. Some speculated that a recent software update may have triggered the problems.
Initially, the official Google Nest Community account acknowledged the complaints but did not specifically address the ad issue. “We are aware of an issue with playing YouTube Music on some Google Home devices. We’re investigating and will provide you an update as soon as we can,” the company stated.
A follow-up comment later confirmed that the issue had been resolved and encouraged users to report any ongoing problems. The fix offers a sigh of relief for subscribers who pay specifically for an uninterrupted experience.
The incident comes as Google continues to improve its smart home ecosystem, with new Gemini-powered smart speakers and Nest products expected to launch in the coming months.
