WhatsApp, owned by Meta, has started rolling out a new feature that allows recently added group members to view selected messages exchanged before they joined.
The update, titled “Group Message History,” enables group admins and existing participants to choose between 25 and 100 recent messages to share with a newcomer. Until now, individuals added to a group could only access messages posted after their entry, which often caused confusion in fast-moving conversations.
According to the company’s official blog announcement, message history is not shared automatically. Instead, it must be manually selected at the time a new participant is added. The shared messages appear differently from regular chat content, clearly displaying sender names and timestamps. All group members are also notified when past messages are made visible to a new entrant.
Administrators can opt out of this feature if they prefer not to allow history sharing within their groups.
The rollout has begun for both Android and iOS users and will expand globally in the coming weeks. WhatsApp has confirmed that messages shared through this feature will continue to be protected by end-to-end encryption, ensuring that privacy safeguards remain intact.
