WhatsApp tests ‘After Reading’ disappearing messages feature

By Sabeeh Zanair :

WhatsApp is testing a new feature that will allow messages to automatically disappear after they have been read, expanding its existing disappearing messages options.

According to the platform that tracks WhatsApp updates, WABetaInfo, the new setting  called “After reading”  is currently under development and may be introduced in a future version of the messaging app.

Under the proposed feature, messages sent with the timer enabled would be removed from the sender’s chat 15 minutes after they are sent. On the recipient’s side, the message would disappear 15 minutes after it has been opened and read.

If the recipient does not open the message, it will automatically vanish after 24 hours, ensuring that unread messages do not remain in the chat indefinitely.

WhatsApp already allows users to enable disappearing messages that automatically delete after 24 hours, seven days, or 90 days. The new option would add another layer of privacy by ensuring that messages disappear shortly after being viewed.

Users are expected to be able to activate the feature for individual chats or set it as the default option for all new conversations once it becomes available.

The company has not yet announced an official release date, but the feature is expected to appear in a future WhatsApp update after testing is complete.
