iPhone Charging Slowly? Apple’s ‘Clean Energy Charging’ Feature May Be the Reason

By Malik Shahzad Aslam :

Many iPhone users have recently reported that their devices charge unusually slowly or remain plugged in for hours without reaching full battery. However, experts say the issue is not related to hardware faults or battery defects, but rather a built-in feature designed to reduce environmental impact.

The feature, introduced by Apple Inc. in October 2022 with the release of iOS 16.1, is called Clean Energy Charging. It aims to lower the carbon footprint associated with smartphone charging.

According to Apple, the system works by analyzing carbon emission forecasts from the local power grid when the device is connected to a charger. Based on this data, the iPhone may delay or slow charging until cleaner energy sources — such as renewable power — are more widely available. As a result, some users may notice that their device does not start charging immediately or takes longer than usual to reach 100 percent.

The feature is designed to operate in locations where users spend significant time, such as at home or at work. Over time, the iPhone learns these frequent charging locations and adjusts behavior accordingly. It does not usually activate in new or temporary locations, which explains why charging patterns may differ while traveling.

Clean Energy Charging is enabled by default on compatible devices. Users who prefer uninterrupted charging can disable it by going to Settings, tapping Battery, selecting Battery Health & Charging, and switching off the Clean Energy Charging option.

Technology analysts say that while the feature supports sustainability goals, it may confuse users who are unaware of its function. Those experiencing slow or delayed charging are advised to review their battery settings before assuming a technical fault with their device.
