Karachi Turns to AI Cameras to Crack Down on Illegal Parking with Automated E-Challans

By Sabeeh Zanair :

Authorities in Pakistan’s largest city are introducing a new automated traffic enforcement system aimed at tackling illegal parking, with Smart No-Parking Cameras set to monitor restricted areas and automatically issue electronic fines to violators.

The Sindh Safe Cities Authority is installing advanced cameras across Karachi that will detect vehicles parked in no-parking zones and send real-time information to the Karachi Traffic Police’s Traffic Reporting and Control System (TRACS). The system will allow authorities to issue faceless e-challans without requiring traffic officials to be physically present at the location.

Sindh Safe Cities Authority Director General Sarfraz Nawaz said the technology would help improve enforcement by allowing violations to be identified quickly and processed digitally. He added that the system would make traffic management more efficient while reducing delays in action against illegal parking.

The Smart No-Parking Cameras are part of the wider Karachi Safe City Project, under which the Sindh Safe Cities Authority has developed a large surveillance network featuring more than 1,300 artificial intelligence-powered cameras across the city.

These AI-based cameras are designed to identify vehicles, individuals and unusual activity, providing authorities with real-time monitoring capabilities. The system is intended to support law enforcement, improve traffic control and strengthen public safety measures in the densely populated metropolis.

The existing surveillance infrastructure already supports the TRACS platform, which has been used to detect traffic violations and generate automated e-challans. The introduction of dedicated no-parking detection expands the role of the system by adding another category of violations that can be monitored digitally.

Officials said the new system will enable traffic authorities to take action against illegal parking immediately after a violation is recorded. The move is expected to reduce dependence on manual enforcement and provide a more consistent approach to applying parking regulations.

Nawaz urged motorists to follow designated parking rules and avoid leaving vehicles in restricted areas. He said the initiative is aimed at helping citizens avoid penalties while contributing to a more organised and disciplined traffic environment.

Karachi has long struggled with traffic congestion, partly due to limited parking spaces, roadside parking and growing vehicle numbers. Authorities hope that expanding AI-based monitoring will improve road management and support the city’s transition towards a smarter urban transport system.
