New Gemini-powered feature lets users transform videos with cinematic effects, artistic styles and AI enhancements
Google has introduced Video Remix, a new artificial intelligence-powered feature for Google Photos that allows users to transform and edit videos in seconds using generative AI.
The feature, announced on Wednesday, is powered by Gemini Omni, Google’s latest multimodal AI model designed to generate and modify different types of content from a variety of inputs. With Video Remix, users can apply cinematic effects, artistic styles and lighting enhancements without requiring advanced video-editing skills.
The launch forms part of Google’s broader strategy to integrate generative AI across its consumer products as competition intensifies with companies including Apple, OpenAI and Adobe.
AI editing built into Google Photos
Video Remix is available through the Create tab in Google Photos, where users can apply a range of AI-generated transformations to their videos with just a few taps.
Among the available tools are AI relighting, which can brighten poorly lit footage and create different lighting moods, as well as background transformation effects that alter the appearance of a video’s surroundings.
The feature also supports artistic filters that can convert videos into styles resembling watercolour paintings, oil paintings and hand-drawn sketches, giving users more creative ways to personalise their content.
For example, a standard outdoor clip can be transformed to appear as though it was filmed inside a greenhouse, while AI lighting can simulate warm morning sunlight or other cinematic effects.
Google said the goal is to make professional-looking video editing accessible to everyday users.
“Creating beautiful video clips shouldn’t require professional skills or hours of editing. With Video Remix in Google Photos, users can transform everyday videos into shareable moments in just a few taps,” the company said.
Rolling out to users in Pakistan and other markets
Google has begun rolling out Video Remix to subscribers of its Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra plans.
The feature is launching in several countries, including Pakistan, the United States, India, Japan, Brazil, Indonesia, South Korea, Mexico, Bangladesh, Turkey, the Philippines, Argentina, Colombia and Egypt.
Availability will expand gradually as the rollout continues.
Part of Google’s expanding AI ecosystem
Video Remix is the latest addition to Google’s growing collection of AI-powered tools within Google Photos.
In recent months, the company has introduced features that use artificial intelligence to improve portraits by reducing blemishes, refining skin tone, enhancing eye brightness and making other subtle photo adjustments.
Google has also unveiled AI-powered shopping and fashion features, including tools that organise images of clothing into a digital wardrobe and generate outfit suggestions based on users’ existing collections.
Competition in AI-powered creativity
The introduction of Video Remix reflects the growing competition among major technology companies to embed generative AI into creative software.
Adobe has expanded its Firefly AI tools for image and video editing, while Apple has begun integrating Apple Intelligence features into its ecosystem. OpenAI has also introduced increasingly advanced image and video generation capabilities through its AI models.
By bringing AI-powered editing directly into Google Photos, Google is seeking to simplify content creation while encouraging users to remain within its ecosystem rather than relying on third-party editing applications.
As artificial intelligence continues to reshape digital creativity, features like Video Remix could make advanced video editing more accessible to casual users, content creators and social media enthusiasts alike.
