The Punjab government has announced the introduction of new electric buses in 14 districts as part of its plan to modernise public transportation and promote cleaner urban mobility across the province.
The latest phase of the electric bus programme is expected to begin by the end of July 2026, with new vehicles being deployed in several major cities and smaller districts to improve public transport access for commuters.
Under the rollout plan, Chiniot, Layyah, Okara and Sialkot will each receive 10 electric buses, while Lahore, Gujranwala and Multan will get 12 buses each to strengthen urban transport services.
Other districts, including Murree, Gujrat, Sheikhupura, Vehari, Kasur, Lodhran, Nankana Sahib and Narowal, will receive 11 electric buses each as part of the expansion programme.
Hundreds More Electric Buses Planned
The Punjab government has also announced that an additional 488 electric buses are expected to arrive in Pakistan by the end of August 2026.
Officials said these buses will be distributed across different districts after delivery, further expanding the province’s electric public transport network.
The move is part of a broader effort to reduce reliance on traditional fuel-powered vehicles, lower transport emissions and provide more affordable and environmentally friendly travel options for citizens.
Investment in Sustainable Transport
Officials said billions of rupees have been allocated through the Annual Development Programme (ADP) to support transport infrastructure projects and improve commuting facilities across Punjab.
The government said electric buses would help address several challenges faced by urban areas, including air pollution, rising fuel costs and increasing demand for reliable public transportation.
Electric vehicles produce fewer emissions compared with conventional diesel buses, making them an important part of efforts to improve air quality in cities.
Punjab’s Push Towards Electric Mobility
The expansion of electric buses follows growing interest in sustainable transportation solutions across Pakistan, where major cities continue to face traffic congestion and poor air quality.
Transport experts say the success of electric bus projects will depend not only on the availability of vehicles but also on supporting infrastructure, including charging stations, maintenance facilities and efficient route planning.
The Punjab government said the initiative reflects its commitment to developing a cleaner, safer and more modern public transport system for residents across the province.
