Students develop app to help passengers navigate Punjab’s electric bus service

By Sabeeh Zunair :

Two students have created a mobile application designed to help passengers using Punjab’s electric bus service access route and schedule information, in an effort to address ongoing difficulties in finding reliable timings.

One of the developers, Muhammad Ghayas, said the idea emerged from personal experience after he waited at a bus stop for nearly 30 minutes, only to discover that the last bus on his route had already departed. He said the incident motivated him and his colleague to develop a tool that could provide timely updates to commuters.

According to the developers, the application offers details on bus routes, stops and departure schedules. It also sends notifications to users if there are any changes to routes or timings. Ghayas said the app relies on publicly available data and presents it in a simplified format, adding that it can function even without an internet connection.

The application has not yet been released on the Google Play Store and is currently accessible through a website. The developers said it gained traction after being shared on Instagram, where it received more than 50,000 views within two days and was downloaded over 500 times.

Co-developer Rizwan Ali said the project remains in its early stages and does not yet include live bus tracking. He noted that adding such a feature would require coordination with relevant authorities.

The students said they have approached the Punjab Transport Authority, the Punjab Information Technology Board and the provincial government for support in expanding the application, including the potential integration of real-time tracking.
