Alibaba Launches ‘Wukong’ AI Platform as Competition Heats Up in China

By Tanveer Ahmed :

Chinese tech giant Alibaba Group has unveiled a new artificial intelligence platform aimed at businesses, stepping up competition in China’s fast-growing AI tools market.

The platform, named Wukong, is designed to automate complex workplace tasks by coordinating multiple AI agents within a single system. It can handle functions such as document editing, managing spreadsheets, transcribing meetings and conducting research, according to the company.

Currently, the service is being rolled out through an invitation-only beta programme.

Push into enterprise AI

The launch follows a broader restructuring by Alibaba, which recently introduced a new business division focused on AI development. Wukong is a key product under this initiative, signalling the company’s intent to expand its footprint in enterprise-focused artificial intelligence.

Users can access the platform either as a desktop application or through DingTalk, which is widely used by businesses across China. The system is also expected to integrate with other major communication tools, including Slack, Microsoft Teams and WeChat.

Rising competition in AI agent market

Alibaba’s move comes amid growing interest in AI agent technology across China, driven in part by the popularity of OpenClaw, which has gained traction among developers and businesses experimenting with automation tools.

The surge in demand has prompted several major technology firms to enter the space. Companies such as ByteDance, Tencent and startup Zhipu AI have also introduced similar platforms.

Security concerns remain

The rapid growth of AI agent tools has drawn attention from regulators, who have raised concerns about potential security risks linked to widespread adoption.

Despite these concerns, industry momentum appears strong, with firms racing to develop more advanced systems capable of automating a wide range of business processes.

Analysts say Alibaba’s latest move reflects intensifying competition in the sector, as companies seek to position themselves at the forefront of enterprise AI solutions.
