The Government of Pakistan has launched a major initiative to promote electric two and three-wheelers, offering substantial subsidies to encourage citizens to shift away from fuel-powered vehicles and embrace cleaner mobility options.
The Prime Minister’s Electric Bike and Rickshaw Scheme, introduced under the Pakistan Accelerated Vehicle Electrification programme, carries a total investment of Rs100 billion over multiple phases, with Rs9 billion allocated for the current fiscal year.
Subsidy Details and Distribution Targets
Under the program, 116,000 electric motorcycles will receive government support this year, with each vehicle benefiting from Rs80,000 in financial assistance. Electric rickshaws are eligible for significantly higher subsidies of Rs400,000 per vehicle.
Officials aim to distribute 76,000 motorcycles by June 2026, with one quarter of the quota reserved exclusively for female applicants. This allocation is intended to enhance women’s mobility and economic participation.
The Engineering Development Board’s chief executive noted that electric motorcycles available through the scheme are priced substantially lower than comparable market models, making them more accessible to ordinary citizens.
Who Can Apply
Pakistani citizens between eighteen and sixty-five years of age with valid national identity cards and clean financial records are eligible to participate. Applicants for electric motorcycles must hold either a valid driving license or learner’s permit, while rickshaw applicants need proper driving licenses.
Students applying must submit valid educational institution identification or proof of admission. Additional requirements include passport-sized photographs and bank account details.
Application Process
Interested individuals can submit applications through the official government portal. The registration procedure requires creating an account using CNIC and mobile number, completing the online form, uploading required documents, and selecting preferred vehicle type.
If applications exceed available quotas, a computerized balloting system will determine successful candidates to ensure transparency and fairness. Approved applicants will receive notifications through SMS or portal updates.
Economic and Environmental Impact
Programme officials emphasize that the system operates fully automated to ensure transparency and efficient processing. Electric motorcycles can save users approximately eight thousand rupees monthly in fuel expenses, providing significant long-term financial benefits.
The scheme particularly targets students, women, low-income families, and small business owners, offering access to modern and affordable transportation. Subsidy amounts are transferred directly to approved bank accounts through the State Bank of Pakistan, preventing misuse of government funds.
Phased Rollout
The first phase of the program already provided subsidies to forty-one thousand recipients, including forty thousand electric bikes and one thousand electric rickshaws and loaders. The second phase is now underway, aiming to support more than seventy-eight thousand additional electric vehicles.
Government officials expect the initiative to reduce fuel import bills, combat environmental pollution, promote alternative energy sources, and foster a sustainable transport system across the country.
