Apple has announced plans to relocate some Mac Mini manufacturing to the United States, moving production from Asia to a Houston facility as trade tensions and potential tariffs reshape the technology giant’s global supply chain.
The iPhone maker confirmed Tuesday that assembly of the Mac Mini desktop computer will begin later this year at a Houston plant, marking a significant expansion of domestic manufacturing operations.
Investment and Job Creation
The company is simultaneously expanding the Texas facility to include a new training centre focused on advanced manufacturing techniques. Apple officials stated that the Houston operations would generate thousands of American jobs.
The Mac Mini announcement follows Apple’s broader commitment announced last August to invest $600 billion in the United States over the next four years, representing one of the largest corporate spending pledges in recent memory.
Political Pressure and Tariff Uncertainty
The production shift comes amid renewed uncertainty surrounding trade policy and follows direct pressure from the White House. In May, President Donald Trump revealed he had spoken with Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook, advising him against expanding production facilities in India and urging him to bring manufacturing to America.
Trump had previously threatened Apple with a 25 percent tariff on products manufactured overseas, marking a sharp reversal from earlier policy when his administration had exempted smartphones, computers, and other electronics from previous rounds of tariffs on Chinese imports.
The current tariff landscape remains fluid. The United States has imposed a new 10 percent tariff on all goods not covered by exemptions, following the Supreme Court’s rejection of duties imposed last year. The rate was first announced by Trump on Friday, differing from the 15 percent figure he promised a day later.
Apple’s Manufacturing History
“Apple is deeply committed to the future of American manufacturing,” Cook said in a statement accompanying the announcement.
The company has a mixed record when it comes to following through on manufacturing promises. In 2019, Cook toured a Texas factory with Trump that was promoted as a new manufacturing site. However, the facility had been producing Apple computers since 2013, and Apple has since moved that production to Thailand.
The company continues to manufacture the vast majority of its products, including iPhones and iPads, in Asia—primarily in China—although it has diversified some production to Vietnam, Thailand, and India in recent years.
AI Server Production Ahead of Schedule
The company also reported that production of AI servers, which began in Houston last year, is running ahead of schedule. This facility serves as the foundation for the expanded manufacturing operations now planned for Mac Mini assembly.
The announcement represents Apple’s latest effort to balance its deeply integrated Asian supply chain with growing political and economic pressure to expand domestic manufacturing footprint.
