WordPress.com Introduces Built-In AI Assistant for Real-Time Website Editing

By Ariz Riaz :

WordPress.com has unveiled a new built-in AI assistant designed to help website owners edit and manage their sites using simple natural language commands. The feature works directly within a website’s interface, understanding its existing content and layout to apply changes instantly.

The AI assistant enables users to adjust layouts, refine design elements, and update visual patterns simply by typing instructions. Whether it’s making a page look more modern, brightening color schemes, or selecting cleaner and more professional fonts, the system can process general prompts and reflect updates in real time.

The feature is optional and must be manually activated. Users can enable it by logging into their dashboard, selecting a site from the Sites list, navigating to Settings, and switching on the “Enable AI assistant” option under AI tools. However, customers who build their websites using the platform’s AI website builder will have the assistant automatically activated.

Layout and Content Enhancements

The assistant supports structural updates for sites using block themes. Users can request additions such as a contact page or a testimonials section, which the AI inserts into appropriate locations. It is not available for classic themes.

Beyond design adjustments, the tool can also refine written content. Website owners can ask it to rewrite text for tone improvement, enhance clarity, or translate content into different languages.

Integrated Editing and Collaboration

The AI assistant is also embedded within the block notes editor introduced in WordPress 6.9. Team members can collaborate on content while accessing AI-powered suggestions for headlines, grammar checks, and factual improvements. By typing “@ai” followed by a request, users receive contextual responses, including relevant links and references when external sources are cited.

AI-Powered Image Generation

For visuals, the system incorporates image-generation capabilities powered by Google’s Gemini Nano Banana AI models. Through a “Generate Image” option in the Media Library, users can create new visuals or modify existing ones by defining style preferences and aspect ratios.

With this rollout, WordPress.com aims to simplify site management and expand creative control for users without requiring advanced technical expertise.
