With Samsung’s latest flagship now on the market, many users are asking a simple question: does the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra offer enough improvements to justify its premium price, or is last year’s model still the smarter buy?
The answer may surprise some buyers. You don’t necessarily need the newest Ultra to enjoy a top-tier smartphone experience — and opting for the older model could save you a significant amount of money.
The Galaxy S25 Ultra sits at the top of Samsung’s lineup with cutting-edge hardware, but it also comes with a steep price tag of around $1,300. In contrast, the Galaxy S24 Ultra, released just a year earlier, is now widely available for under $1,000 brand new, and much cheaper on the second-hand market.
For users upgrading from older devices, the S24 Ultra has suddenly become one of the best value premium phones available.
Design and Display: Almost Identical
From the outside, the two phones look nearly the same. Both feature large high-resolution AMOLED displays with smooth 120Hz refresh rates, titanium frames, and IP68-rated water and dust resistance.
They also include Samsung’s built-in S Pen for note-taking and creative work. Interestingly, the S24 Ultra retains some stylus features that were removed from the newer model, making it arguably more functional in certain cases.
In daily use, there is virtually no difference in build quality or screen performance between the two.
Camera: Marginal Gains
Camera upgrades are often the main selling point of new flagship phones, but this year’s improvements are subtle.
The Galaxy S25 Ultra introduces a higher-resolution ultra-wide camera, but both models still share a 200-megapixel main sensor and similar telephoto systems.
In real-world photography, the differences are minimal. Both phones deliver excellent dynamic range, strong low-light performance, and sharp zoom images.
Unless you closely compare photos side by side, most users would struggle to tell which device took which picture.
Performance: More Power Than You Need
The biggest technical difference lies in processing power.
The S25 Ultra runs on the Snapdragon 8 Elite chip, while the S24 Ultra uses the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. On paper, the newer processor is about 20–25% faster.
In practice, both phones feel equally smooth. They handle demanding games like Genshin Impact and PUBG at maximum settings, run heavy photo-editing apps effortlessly, and navigate Android 16 with Samsung’s One UI 8 without lag.
The S25 Ultra is faster, but the S24 Ultra already offers more performance than most users will ever need.
Software and Updates
Both devices currently run Android 16 with Samsung’s latest features, including AI tools such as live translation, smart photo editing, Circle to Search, and Google Gemini integration.
The only meaningful difference is update longevity. The S25 Ultra will receive one extra year of updates, but Samsung has already promised seven years of support for the S24 Ultra — keeping it secure and updated until at least 2031.
That’s longer than many people keep their phones.
Battery Life: No Real Winner
Both phones use 5,000mAh batteries and support 45W fast charging. In real-world use, battery life is nearly identical, with both easily lasting a full day.
In some tests, the S24 Ultra even performed slightly better in continuous video playback.
Unless buying a heavily used device, battery degradation on the S24 Ultra is unlikely to be noticeable.
The Real Difference: Price
When comparing both phones side by side, the similarities far outweigh the differences.

The main distinctions are processing power and price.
With the S24 Ultra now selling for hundreds of dollars less, it offers a far better value proposition. You get a true flagship experience without paying flagship launch prices.
And this trend isn’t limited to Samsung. As brands like Apple, Google, and OnePlus continue extending software support and refining hardware incrementally, buying last year’s premium model is increasingly becoming the smartest move for cost-conscious consumers.
In short: the Galaxy S25 Ultra is impressive — but the Galaxy S24 Ultra is the better deal.
