Pakistan Puts EO-2 Satellite Into Orbit, Boosting Earth Observation Network

By Tanveer Ahmed :

Pakistan has taken another significant step in its space journey with the successful launch of its second locally built Electro-Optical satellite, EO-2. The satellite was launched into orbit from China’s Yangjiang Sea Launch facility, the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) announced.

Developed entirely by Pakistani engineers at SUPARCO’s Satellite Research and Development Centre, EO-2 represents years of domestic research and innovation in satellite engineering. Officials said the mission reflects the country’s growing capacity to independently design and operate advanced space systems.

EO-2 will work alongside the previously launched EO-1 satellite to provide high-resolution images of Earth’s surface. The dual-satellite system will allow continuous monitoring under different environmental and lighting conditions, improving accuracy in mapping and data analysis.

SUPARCO said the new satellite will support a wide range of national needs, including crop assessment, disaster risk reduction, urban expansion monitoring, water management, and climate change studies. The real-time data generated by the satellite is expected to help policymakers make informed and timely decisions.

Beyond practical applications, the mission is also viewed as a strategic investment in Pakistan’s technological future. It contributes to the development of local expertise in space sciences and strengthens the country’s long-term goal of achieving greater technological independence.

The launch of EO-2 underscores Pakistan’s commitment to advancing its space programme and using satellite technology to support economic growth, research, and national planning.
