Rawalpindi has rolled out drone monitoring and a significantly expanded network of high-tech cameras in a major shift toward technology-driven traffic enforcement. The new system is being deployed across the city’s most congested zones, where accidents and traffic violations are most common.
The initiative aligns with Punjab’s broader strategy to modernize traffic management. Among major cities, Rawalpindi is the first to implement large-scale drone surveillance integrated with the Safe City infrastructure.
Drones Enter the Traffic Enforcement System
Chief Technology Officer Farhan Aslam said the technology is designed to curb dangerous driving patterns by providing real-time oversight. He said We are now taking action against violators through live drone feeds.
Officials say the drones will help identify underage drivers, motorcyclists without helmets, and motorists violating one-way routes. The emphasis, they noted, is on preventing accidents rather than simply issuing penalties.
Smart Cameras and E-Challan Integration
The city’s e-challan system, fully connected to the Safe City Command and Control Centre since November 22, has already issued nearly 600 electronic fines in its first four days of operation.
More than 2,000 surveillance cameras installed at 359 locations, along with an additional 15 cameras at key entry and exit points, are actively monitoring traffic. These cameras evaluate traffic conditions, record violations, monitor warden performance, and keep watch over major corridors.
At this stage, enforcement teams are concentrating on violations that pose serious safety risks — including riding without helmets, using mobile phones while driving, and failing to wear seatbelts.
