PLASA Show 2025: AI, Sustainability, and a Wireless Revolution: London’s Entertainment Tech Industry Unveils the Future

BY Tanveer Ahmed

LONDON : The future of live entertainment technology—from stadium tours and West End theatre to broadcast studios—was dramatically unveiled at the PLASA Show in Olympia, London, this past week. As the industry grapples with the dual pressures of rapid technological advancement and urgent sustainability mandates, the 2025 event proved to be a critical junction, defined by major breakthroughs in wireless audio, automated lighting, and AI-driven workflow solutions.

The undisputed highlight was Sennheiser’s Spectera, which clinched the prestigious PLASA Gold Award for Innovation. Dubbed a “game-changer” by judges, Spectera is the world’s first wideband, bidirectional wireless ecosystem, effectively rewriting the rulebook for wireless microphones and in-ear monitoring (IEMs). By managing up to 64 channels in a single rack unit and offering full remote control over the complete signal chain, the system solves long-standing challenges in spectrum management and deployment complexity, promising unprecedented reliability for large-scale live productions.

The Dawn of AI-Assisted Creativity

If Spectera dominated the audio space, Artificial Intelligence was the defining trend across the rest of the show floor. Manufacturers are rapidly integrating AI to simplify complex, repetitive tasks, freeing human programmers for creative work.

The judges recognized this shift by awarding Disguise for their Ask AId3n assistant, integrated into their Designer Pro software. This tool allows production teams to create and execute reusable workflow tools using natural language prompts, streamlining hours of programming—a perfect example of emerging technology optimizing efficiency rather than replacing creativity. Vari-Lite also impressed with its VLHive 151 Digital FX, showcasing a digital light engine concept that uses minimal moving parts, an innovation that could signal a significant shift toward digital, less mechanically complex automated lighting rigs.

Sustainability and Efficiency Take Center Stage

The conversation at PLASA was not solely focused on power and performance; efficiency and environmental responsibility were central themes. The show celebrated products that deliver professional-grade results while minimizing footprint, cost, and complexity.

Powersoft’s NOTA 142 amplifier was lauded as the “Swiss Army Knife” of small amplification. Delivering significant power via a compact, PoE (Power over Ethernet) powered unit, it drastically simplifies installation and cabling—a boon for system integrators. In the staging and rigging sector, Doughty Engineering earned an award for their Lightweight Quick Trigger clamp, proving that even small, subtle improvements to industry workhorses can significantly enhance safety and efficiency.

The industry also formalized its commitment to a greener future with the launch of the Entertainment Technology Industry Alliance (ETIA). This new alliance, bringing together associations from across Europe, aims to pool expertise and focus immediately on developing sustainability standards, product life-cycle analysis, and comparable environmental data for the sector.

From Sennheiser’s wireless revolution to Disguise’s AI-assisted workflows, the 2025 PLASA Show confirms that the live entertainment technology sector is not just recovering, but accelerating—driven by smarter, more sustainable, and ultimately, more powerful tools.
