China’s World Artificial Intelligence Conference to focus on AI breakthroughs, international cooperation and global regulation

The 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) and High-Level Meeting on Global AI Governance will take place in Shanghai, China, from July 17 to 20, bringing together technology leaders, policymakers, researchers and industry experts to discuss the future of artificial intelligence.

Held under the theme “AI Partnership for a Brighter Future,” the four-day event aims to promote international cooperation, showcase emerging AI technologies and address growing challenges surrounding AI governance, safety and responsible development.

China’s Foreign Ministry has confirmed that President Xi Jinping will attend the opening ceremony and deliver a keynote address, highlighting Beijing’s focus on artificial intelligence as a strategic technology for economic development and global cooperation.

More Than 1,100 Companies to Showcase AI Innovations

According to International Services Shanghai (ISS), the official portal of the Shanghai municipal government, WAIC 2026 will feature more than 140 forums and attract over 1,400 participants from around the world.

The conference exhibition will cover more than 100,000 square metres, with over 1,100 companies expected to participate. Organisers say exhibitors will present more than 3,000 AI-related products, including over 300 global debut releases.

The event will highlight advances in areas such as:

Industrial AI applications
Robotics
Open-source AI ecosystems
AI-powered services

Organisers describe WAIC as one of the world’s leading AI platforms for showcasing technological breakthroughs and discussing the future direction of the industry.

Global AI Governance Takes Centre Stage

A major focus of WAIC 2026 will be international AI governance. Representatives from multiple countries and international organisations are expected to discuss regulations, AI safety, ethical challenges and equal access to artificial intelligence technologies.

Chinese officials have emphasized the importance of cooperation between nations to manage AI risks while ensuring that developing countries, particularly those in the Global South, can benefit from AI advancements.

Beijing has promoted initiatives including the Global AI Governance Initiative, calling for international collaboration on AI standards, responsible innovation and technology sharing.

Leading Scientists and Experts Expected

ISS said the conference will feature prominent researchers and AI experts, including:

Richard Sutton, a pioneer in reinforcement learning
Yoshua Bengio, one of the leading figures in deep learning research

They are expected to participate in discussions on AI development trends, governance frameworks and the long-term impact of artificial intelligence.

AI Comes to Shanghai’s Public Spaces

Beyond traditional exhibitions and forums, WAIC 2026 will expand AI demonstrations into public areas across Shanghai. The programme will include interactive AI experiences, startup incubation activities, talent exchanges and innovation competitions.

The initiative aims to connect researchers, companies and entrepreneurs while encouraging the development of new AI businesses.

Shanghai has emerged as one of China’s major artificial intelligence centres, hosting hundreds of AI companies and a growing technology ecosystem.

Analysts say WAIC 2026 will further strengthen China’s role in global AI development by providing a platform for technological competition, collaboration and discussions on how artificial intelligence should be governed worldwide.
