Unverified portal contains suspicious links as officials have yet to launch the official registration website
A website claiming to offer online registration for the Punjab government’s Electric Bike Scheme 2026 has gone viral on social media, prompting concerns over its authenticity and the safety of users’ personal information.
The portal, hosted under the domain e-bikescheme.pk, presents itself as an information and registration platform for the provincial government’s e-bike initiative. However, several indicators suggest that it is not an official government website, and citizens are being urged to exercise caution.
Suspicious content raises concerns
A review of the website reveals multiple warning signs that cast doubt on its legitimacy.
Among the most notable are unrelated keywords and promotional links embedded throughout the site, including references to online gaming platforms and gambling-style applications. Clicking on these terms redirects visitors to third-party websites advertising online games and platforms claiming to offer cash rewards.
Cybersecurity experts often consider such unrelated outbound links a warning sign, particularly on websites claiming to represent government programmes.
The portal also lacks official government branding, ownership information and links to verified Punjab government websites, making it difficult to confirm its authenticity.
Official scheme announced, but registration yet to begin
The Punjab government has announced plans to significantly expand its electric bike programme as part of its efforts to promote affordable and environmentally friendly transportation.
Under the initiative, 100,000 electric bikes are expected to be distributed over the coming year with a government subsidy of Rs70,000 per vehicle.
According to previously announced details, male students will be required to pay a Rs14,000 down payment, followed by interest-free monthly instalments of Rs2,100.
For female students, the provincial government has said it will cover both the down payment and registration charges, leaving beneficiaries responsible only for the monthly instalments.
The programme is also expected to be extended to government employees in a later phase.
No official registration portal announced
Despite the public interest surrounding the initiative, the Punjab government has not yet launched an official online registration portal or announced the complete application process.
Officials have advised citizens to rely only on verified government announcements and official websites for updates regarding registration dates and eligibility requirements.
Applicants are also encouraged not to enter personal details, identity card numbers, bank information or other sensitive data on unofficial websites claiming to offer registration.
How to avoid online scams
Cybersecurity specialists recommend verifying the web address before submitting information on any government-related website.
Citizens should check whether a portal is linked through official Punjab government channels and avoid websites containing suspicious advertisements, gambling-related content or requests for unnecessary personal or financial information.
As interest in the Punjab Electric Bike Scheme continues to grow, experts say scammers may attempt to exploit public demand by creating fake websites or misleading social media posts. Until the government formally launches the registration process, prospective applicants are advised to wait for announcements from verified official sources.
