Punjab Plans Satellite Internet Rollout to Bridge Digital Divide

The Government of Punjab has unveiled plans to introduce satellite-based internet services aimed at expanding connectivity to remote and underserved regions, as part of a broader push to reduce Pakistan’s digital divide.

The announcement was made by Anusha Rahman, senior adviser to the chief minister, during a leadership summit in Lahore. The event brought together policymakers, academics and industry stakeholders to explore emerging technologies, including blockchain and digital assets.

Rahman said the initiative reflects the government’s focus on delivering high-speed internet access to areas that have historically remained disconnected due to infrastructure challenges. Satellite technology, she noted, offers a practical solution for extending connectivity beyond urban centres where traditional broadband networks are difficult to deploy.

Under the proposed plan, satellite internet services will be introduced across key public sector institutions, including schools, colleges and healthcare facilities. Officials believe the move will strengthen access to digital services, improve education delivery, enhance healthcare systems and boost administrative efficiency in remote communities.

Highlighting the scale of the challenge, Rahman said public demand for digital access is rising rapidly, yet significant parts of the province still lack reliable internet. To address this gap, the government has launched a programme titled “Connect the Unconnected”, designed to promote inclusion in the digital economy.

The provincial IT department is already working on multiple projects aligned with this vision. As part of a longer-term strategy, the government plans to provide around six million young people with access to modern technological tools and opportunities over the next four years.

The satellite rollout is expected to complement existing broadband expansion efforts and could play a key role in improving connectivity in hard-to-reach regions, where conventional infrastructure remains costly and complex to install.
