Google has rolled out a major update to its digital wallet service, introducing real-time flight updates aimed at making travel more seamless for users during the busy travel season.
The service, known as Google Wallet, already allows users to store payment cards, IDs, tickets and boarding passes in a single platform. With the latest upgrade, it is evolving further into a more comprehensive travel assistant.
A key addition is the expansion of the “Live Updates” feature, which now includes flight tracking. Once a user books a flight, relevant travel details such as boarding passes, QR codes, departure timings, flight duration and estimated arrival times can appear directly within the app.
For users on newer Android devices, particularly those running Android 16 or later, the updates go a step further. Flight information can now be displayed on the lock screen and always-on display, allowing travellers to check their status instantly without unlocking their phones or opening separate apps.
The feature is designed to reduce reliance on multiple platforms, such as airline apps or email confirmations, by consolidating essential travel information in one place. It also helps users stay informed about common disruptions such as delays, gate changes or cancellations.
In addition, the update makes it easier for travellers to share real-time changes with family or friends, improving coordination for pickups and travel plans.
The upgrade reflects a broader shift in digital services toward real-time, integrated user experiences. However, users will need to ensure that Google Wallet and related services are updated to the latest version for the feature to work.
With this development, Google Wallet is moving beyond its traditional role as a payment tool and positioning itself as a smart travel companion focused on convenience and live information access.
