The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has granted Internet of Things (IoT) licences to 23 companies, in a move aimed at accelerating digital transformation and expanding next-generation connectivity across the country.
The regulator has introduced a Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) licensing framework specifically designed for IoT applications, enabling the deployment of connected technologies across sectors such as smart cities, agriculture, logistics and energy management.
Officials say the initiative reflects growing interest from both domestic and international players in Pakistan’s emerging digital ecosystem, as demand rises for data-driven solutions and automation.
Under the framework, licensed operators will be able to build scalable IoT networks using designated frequency bands, with regulatory oversight intended to ensure secure and interference-free connectivity.
The licensing regime, first opened for applications in 2022, provides a structured process for companies to enter the IoT market. It includes defined technical standards, operational guidelines and compliance requirements related to data protection and network security.
Authorities have also carried out field inspections and surveys of operators to assess performance and identify areas for improvement, as part of efforts to ensure sustainable network deployment.
In parallel, the regulator has issued a consultation paper on short-range devices and terrestrial IoT, seeking industry input to refine policy and support innovation.
Officials say the expansion of IoT infrastructure is expected to play a key role in modernising Pakistan’s economy, enabling smarter services and improving efficiency across industries as the country positions itself within the global digital landscape.
