Pakistan climbs global telecom rankings after major spectrum auction

By Tanveer Ahmed :

Pakistan has risen to seventh place globally among comparable telecom markets following the conclusion of its IMT spectrum auction on 10 March 2026, a significant improvement from its previous 14th position.

According to an official document from the IT Ministry, the allocation of 480 MHz of new spectrum has increased the country’s total assigned IMT spectrum from around 274 MHz to nearly 754 MHz. The expansion places Pakistan ahead of several emerging economies, including Indonesia, Egypt, Turkey, Thailand and Bangladesh.

The increase also narrows the gap with larger markets such as India and South Africa. However, more advanced digital economies continue to lead. Countries including Japan and Saudi Arabia have assigned more than 1.3 GHz of IMT spectrum, while China, Brazil and Philippines also remain ahead.

The auction, described as a key step in preparing for nationwide 5G services, saw spectrum offered across the 700, 2300, 2600 and 3500 MHz bands. More than 80% of the available frequencies were successfully allocated, with full uptake recorded in the 2300 and 2600 MHz bands. Strong demand was also observed for the 3500 MHz band, widely associated with 5G deployment.

Three mobile operators secured spectrum to expand next-generation networks. Jazz acquired 190 MHz across multiple bands, while Ufone obtained 180 MHz, including significant holdings in the 3500 MHz band to support high-capacity 5G services. Zong purchased 110 MHz, focusing on mid-band spectrum to enhance broadband performance.

The auction generated approximately $507m in revenue for the government and was conducted under the supervision of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, with support from NERA Economic Consulting.

Officials say the additional spectrum is expected to improve network quality, increase internet speeds and support the expansion of digital services, including artificial intelligence, fintech and e-commerce.

While the latest development strengthens Pakistan’s position among emerging telecom markets and advances its readiness for 5G rollout, further spectrum releases will be needed for the country to match leading digital economies.
