Pakistan’s information technology and telecom sector recorded a notable decline in export earnings in January 2026, with remittances slipping by 14.5% to $374 million, down from $437 million in the previous month, official figures from the State Bank of Pakistan showed.
Despite the month-on-month drop, the industry maintained a strong growth trend on a broader scale. Compared to January last year, export receipts rose nearly 19%, up from $313 million in the same month of 2025.
For the current fiscal year so far, spanning July to January, cumulative IT and telecom exports reached $2.61 billion, marking a 19% increase from $2.179 billion during the corresponding period of the previous year.
Market experts attribute the January slowdown to routine delays in international payments and uncertain global economic conditions, rather than any underlying weakness in the sector.
Analysts believe Pakistan’s digital economy remains on a positive path, driven by expanding freelance activity, rising demand for software services, and long-term contracts with overseas clients.
The IT industry continues to rank among the country’s top-performing export sectors and is increasingly seen as a key contributor to foreign exchange earnings and overall economic resilience.
Over recent years, steady growth has been fueled by a larger pool of tech professionals, more software companies entering global markets, and government efforts to promote technology exports as a strategic priority for boosting dollar inflows.
