Apple is reportedly working on a significant upgrade to CarPlay that will allow third-party artificial intelligence assistants to operate inside vehicles. This change could enable popular AI tools such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Anthropic’s Claude to function through voice commands while driving.
So far, CarPlay has restricted voice interaction mainly to Apple’s own Siri and a limited group of supported apps like navigation, calls, messages, and music. The upcoming update signals a shift in Apple’s approach, as the company prepares to give drivers access to more advanced AI-powered experiences through external platforms.
Sources suggest that these AI assistants will be usable in a completely hands-free manner, allowing users to ask questions, receive real-time information, and interact conversationally without needing to touch their phone or the car’s screen.
Despite opening the ecosystem, Apple will retain overall control of the system. Siri will remain the default assistant, and third-party tools will not be able to override Siri’s activation phrase or main control button. Drivers will instead have to manually launch the AI app within CarPlay, after which the assistant can automatically switch into voice mode if supported by the app.
Given Apple’s recent collaboration with Google to integrate Gemini-based features into Siri, extending similar flexibility to CarPlay aligns with its broader strategy.
With this update, drivers may soon use advanced AI tools to plan trips, check traffic conditions, find nearby places, draft messages, or get instant summaries, making in-car assistance far more intelligent and conversational than before.
