Why is the Internet Slow in Pakistan Again?

By Malik Shahzad Aslam :

A significant technical failure at a major upstream network provider caused a widespread internet slowdown across Pakistan on Thursday, January 1, 2026. Official sources and service providers confirmed that the disruption affected multiple cities, leaving millions of residential and business users with sluggish speeds and intermittent connectivity.

The Root Cause: Upstream Network Failure

The performance degradation was traced to a temporary breakdown of one of the country’s two primary upstream providers. These entities act as the backbone of the national digital infrastructure, supplying bulk international and domestic data capacity to local Internet Service Providers (ISPs).

When this primary link went offline, it forced a massive volume of traffic onto secondary backup links. However, these alternative routes lacked the necessary capacity to handle the full load, resulting in severe bandwidth congestion and high latency nationwide.

Impacted Services and Providers

Leading ISP Nayatel and Hum News were among the first to confirm the disruption. Nayatel issued a statement via social media, explaining that the loss of one of its two upstream providers significantly reduced overall network throughput.

Commonly disrupted services included:
  • Financial Transactions: Online banking and digital payment gateways experienced frequent timeouts.
  • Professional Tools: Video conferencing (Zoom, Teams) and cloud-based platforms became unstable.
  • Social Media: Users reported delays in loading content on Meta-owned apps and X.
Restoration and Infrastructure Vulnerability

While technical teams from various ISPs worked alongside the upstream operator to normalize traffic, no definitive timeline for a full resolution was initially provided.

Industry experts pointed out that this incident highlights a critical vulnerability in Pakistan’s digital framework: a heavy reliance on a limited number of upstream providers. When a single major link fails during peak hours, rerouting measures can only partially mitigate the impact, often “crippling” the digital economy for the duration of the outage.
